Craig Berube spoke to reporters after Maple Leafs practice, providing updates on injuries, praising Scott Laughton’s presence, and discussing the team’s recent improvement in net-front play. He also touched on the energy Sammy Blais has brought since rejoining the lineup — and even found time to shout out the Blue Jays’ World Series run.
On William Nylander’s return to practice
“Normal,” Berube said. “But we’ll see tomorrow — it’s going to be a decision based on how he feels. He wants to play, but he doesn’t want to put himself or the team in a bad spot.”
Asked if he’d prefer Nylander take a few games to rest fully, Berube acknowledged the balance: “He’s an important guy, obviously. If he says he’s ready to play and wants to play, I want him in the lineup.”
On Scott Laughton’s recovery
“He’s real close,” Berube said. “We miss him. He’s a good player for us and it’s very encouraging that he got a full practice today.”
Berube called Laughton a “glue guy” and a big part of the team’s character. “He’s the type of guy you want on your team,” he said.
On having Chris Tanev back
“It’s obviously really important for our team,” Berube said. “He’s feeling really good. He’s in a good spot right now.”
On Steven Lorentz’s status
“Timeline-wise, I’d say it’s day-to-day,” Berube said. “That’s really the best answer I can give you.”
On getting a brief family reset
“Yeah, I enjoy going back and seeing my wife and kids,” Berube said. “You don’t see them very often during the year, so a day there is always nice.”
On Matthew Knies playmaking
Berube praised the playmaking improvements, saying, “He’s an underrated passer for sure, but a lot of his assists come from first touches — stripping pucks, getting in on the forecheck, working hard around the net. They’re workman-type assists.”
On Sammy Blais making an impact
“He worked hard in practice and stayed ready,” Berube said. “He was very physical in the game, made some good wall plays, and showed composure with the puck. He was an effective guy for us.”
On Calle Järnkrok’s health
“Yes, he’s fully healthy,” Berube confirmed.
And finally… on watching the Blue Jays
“Yeah, I’ve got to think about where I’m watching it,” Berube remarked. “But rooting for them — hopefully we see a victory tonight. Go Jays.”
