On the Difference in the Game
“We took three penalties. First period, got behind the eight ball. I thought in the second and third we competed hard and battled hard, stuck up for each other, did a lot of good things. We just needed some kills tonight — we didn’t get them.”
On the Team’s Defensive Play
“There are still things we can clean up, but at least we were more aggressive and more physical in our defending — more competitive. There were a couple plays that need better reads. The Pastrňák goal, we gave up the breakaway, and a couple others where he got behind us. Those were beats for me, but like I said, the team responded and competed hard.”
On the Hit on Auston Matthews
“I think it’s a penalty, personally, but I’m not the referee. I don’t like it. I don’t like the hit at all — in that position. Whatever. Nothing I can do about it.”
On Matthews’ Injury Status
“We’ll see tomorrow. Right now, it’s lower body. We’ll see tomorrow how he is. I don’t know exactly — I really can’t give you guys a timeline or how serious it is right now. I’m not sure when he hurt it, to be honest with you.”
On Anthony Stolarz’s Condition
“I don’t believe that’s serious. I think he’ll be fine. I think it was a play that happened in the first period, kind of a battle at the net where he got a little bit stretched out — something in the upper. Do I think he’ll be okay? I hope so. We’ll see.”
On the Team’s Pushback
“I liked our response tonight in the game, which goes a long way. That’s playing team hockey — sticking up for your team and competing for your team.
We just need to clean a few things up. You can’t go to the penalty box that much in a game. It’s going to burn you eventually. We’ve got to be more disciplined there, especially early on. Those were penalties.
Sometimes you’ve got to go through a tough spell, and we are right now. But I liked the way we pulled it together as a group tonight. That’s a positive for me. We’ll keep battling, getting better, and helping these guys get some confidence back in our game. I think we lacked a little confidence early in the game, but when we got down, we played like we can.”
On Max Domi’s Late Penalty
“I don’t know why he called it. I don’t know why he gave Domi the roughing, to be honest with you. I was watching the referee — he didn’t have his hand up or his arm up. I thought it was just going to be five each for fighting. But he thought that he did a little more than the other guy.”
Pulse Takeaway
Craig Berube said penalties cost the Leafs in Boston but praised the team’s effort and pushback after a tough start. He confirmed injuries to Auston Matthews (lower body) and Anthony Stolarz but didn’t believe Stolarz’s was serious. Despite frustration with discipline and officiating, Berube viewed the team’s compete level as a step forward.
