After the Maple Leafs’ 5–4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, captain John Tavares discussed the team’s immaturity in key moments, defensive lapses, and the outstanding play of goaltender Dennis Hildeby. Tavares said the Leafs must be smarter managing the game and focus on tightening up their play without the puck.

On What Made the Hurricanes Tough
“They’re a good hockey team and they put a lot of pressure on you. At times we did some really good things — earned opportunities and gave ourselves a lead — but our game just becomes really immature and we don’t manage it very well.”
On Breaking the Cycle
“We have a lot of very good hockey players, a very veteran team. It just comes down to the decision to do it shift after shift.”
On Frustration and Consistency
“We gain some traction and then we shoot ourselves in the foot again. There’s a ton of hockey left to be played, but we have to pick ourselves back up, get ready for the next opportunity, and build from there.”
On Defensive Breakdowns and Transition Chances
“You’re not going to win consistently giving up that many breakaways. Like Chief says, it’s 50/50. Clearly an area we have to clean up — those plays off transition give their team life and momentum, and really stress our goaltending.”
On Struggles at Home
“You want to take advantage of being at home and be a good home team. Obviously not the way we’d like it to have gone to this point, but all we can do is move forward. We have to regroup, stick together, and find our way through it.”
On Dennis Hildeby’s Performance
“He’s the reason why we had a chance to win the hockey game. Thought he was phenomenal — heck of a job on the PK, especially in the third period. Tight hockey game — he was great.”
On William Nylander’s Missed Chance
“His ability and talent — he puts the puck in the net a lot. The odd time it doesn’t go in. At this level, you move past it and keep playing. You just play your game for 60 minutes — good breaks or bad — and more often than not, you put yourself in position to win.”
Pulse Takeaway
John Tavares said the Leafs’ issues come down to maturity and decision-making. He praised Hildeby for giving the team a chance to win but admitted that turnovers, transition plays, and poor game management continue to cost them points — especially at home.
